Arnold Schwarzenegger has to 'pay $1' to Warner Bros every year for bizarre reason

Arnold Schwarzenegger reportedly has a very specific agreement with the studio

Arnold Schwarzenegger reportedly has to pay $1 to Warner Bros. every year for a rather interesting reason.

Anyone who watched the Oscars earlier this year may recall Arnie taking to the stage with Danny DeVito.

The pair, who both previously played Batman villains, then poked fun at former Batman Michael Keaton in the audience in a hilarious skit.

And it's his role as Mr Freeze in 1997's Batman & Robin which is connected to why Schwarzenegger apparently makes a payment to Warner Bros. every year.

It's a long tradition for actors to sometimes keep the props from big projects they've been involved in as a memento.

For example, Ian McKellen previously revealed to Time magazine that he has Gandalf's sword Glamdring in his hatstand at home.

And the Lord of the Rings star is far from the only actor to do, as it seems Schwarzenegger also has memorabilia from his movies, including his Mr Freeze costume.

So, why is this connected to his $1 payment?

The payment is an example of a 'peppercorn' - a small symbolic payment which is sometimes used to confirm a legal contract.

In this case the payment is for Schwarzenegger to have the costume from his appearance in Batman & Robin on long term lease.

By giving the studio $1 a year the actor reportedly gets to keep it long-term while symbolically acknowledging the studio's continued ownership of it.

That means that when Schwarzenegger passes the costume will likely go back to Warner Bros. and not form part of his estate.

Film producer Peter Macgregor-Scott told The Hollywood Reporter that the decision to grant him the long term lease 'went all the way to the top of the studio'.

He said: "Storage after a movie like Batman Forever becomes a real element. A lot of the sets get folded and held so they are available for the next picture if need be. We didn’t keep the cave, because the cave is so unwieldy.

"You had to make the cave each time. All the unused bat costumes. All the wardrobe saved. The actors would like to walk off with pieces, and we have to be very careful that that happens to an absolute minimum."

Macgregor-Scott continued: "Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted a costume of Mr. Freeze. It went all the way up to the top of the studio. He had to sign a contract, and I think he pays $1 per year to borrow the costume.

"The lights in those costumes last 9,000 hours. He doesn’t have them on all day long, but he does turn them on quite frequently."

To be fair, it's not like Arnie needs the money.

Arnold Schwarzenegger reveals the movies that made him a billionaire

Arnold Schwarzenegger reveals the movies that made him a billionaire
Arnold Schwarzenegger's many successes in the movie industry have helped him to finally achieve billionaire status

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been comfortably one of the biggest stars on TV over the last few decades, and his Hollywood success has translated to riches.

Arnold Schwarzenegger likely had quite a few naysayers when he shifted over to acting from bodybuilding, but boy has it paid off.

It would be more than fair to say he is one of the most recognizable people in Hollywood and when it came to cinema, he was certainly able to get butts in seats.

Initially Schwarzenegger struggled to get roles due to his thick Austrian accent, but when he broke into the scene he became a very safe pair of hands when creating a profitable hit.

Over his career he has churned out around 50 films, which have made a total $5.5 billion at the box office.

This has translated to his own personal wealth due to his ability to take risks and strike up good deals. According to Forbes’ estimates, the 76-year-old is now worth $1 billion.

Speaking in 2016, the Terminator star said that studio executives were hesitant to make his first comedy Twins, which starred the always brilliant Danny Devito.

Instead of taking a salary, he opted to pocket nearly 20 percent of gross receipts instead.

The film became a big hit and he ended up getting $35 million, much more than he would have got on a salary for the flick. This proved to be such a good deal for him the studio would never make it again.

This would certainly become a trend as Schwarzenegger has over 13 films where the film box office earnings would be over $200 million.

Taking the top spot is 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day bringing in $520,881,154.

The second was 2015’S Terminator Genisys which brought in $440,603,537.

Coming in third was another film from the franchise, 2003’s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines which had a box office yield of $433,371,112.

1994’s True Lies also proved to be successful bringing in $378.882,411.

And in fifth place is The Expendables 2, which brought in $314,975,955.

But beyond his success at the movies, the star has said his financial success is very much down to his healthy appetite for risk.

Writing in his book Total Recall, he said: “Conservative bets – the kind that would generate 4 percent a year, say – didn’t interest me.

“I wanted big investments that were interesting, creative and different.”

So the bodybuilder-turned-movie star, turned Governor has certainly taken a few risks and has pretty much come out on top making millions over the years.Featured Image Credit: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic/Getty Images/Warner Bros.

Arnold Schwarzeneggar has shown he has a heart of gold with a sweet gesture for children in the run up to Christmas.

On his social media channels, Schwarzeneggar shared a video of himself at 42nd annual Miracle On First Street event at the Hollenbeck Youth Center in Los Angeles.

Here he gifted children in need a bunch of presents and chatted with parents and staff while posing for pictures.

Speaking about why he does this every year, he explained he wanted to repay the generosity he had received when he arrived in the country.

“When I came to this country my friends from Gold's Gym had a huge Christmas for me and invited me to their house. It was fantastic. They gave me Christmas gifts and they had this beautiful Christmas tree, and I felt so included here in America even though I was a foreigner and just came to this country,' he recalled while at the youth centre.”

Social media users praised Schwarzeneggar for his generosity and called on other users to think about how they can help out others during the holiday period.

Danny DeVito says Arnold Schwarzenegger should have done Twins 2 instead of becoming Governor

But the actor has revealed that the two are now working on something special together.

Stewart Perrie

The world is a less colorful place considering we could have had a Twins sequel.

The original was a smash hit and saw Danny DeVito team up with Arnold Schwarzenegger where they played twins Julius and Vincent Benedict who were split up at birth.

Julius eventually discovers he has a twin brother and sets course for Los Angeles to find his brother.

They couldn't be more different as a result of their upbringing (as well as the science experiment that saw them conceived) and they form an unlikely friendship.

The film was released in 1988 and brought in more than $200 million at the box office on a budget of just $18 million.
Universal Pictures

Naturally, everyone was calling for a sequel so that DeVito and Schwarzenegger could get up to their zany antics once again.

But sadly, it was never meant to be.

In an interview with GQ, Danny lamented not being able to get together with Arnie to make movie magic.

"We missed Twins 2, because he became governor—which, he should have done Twins 2 instead of becoming governor," DeVito said.

"Now we have a little thing going, a little project that we've been chatting about."

When asked whether this new project was related to a Twins sequel, he said: "No, it's just two friends, two guys, because we have a good time together.

"We complement each other in a lot of ways. I am way stronger than he is."

Funnily enough, we were promised a sequel back in 2021 and it was going to involve Tracy Morgan.

DeVito and Schwarzenegger were going to reprise their roles of Vincent and Julius and Morgan was going to be their long-lost triplet brother.

Eddie Murphy was originally attached to the sequel. The director of the 1988 film, Ivan Reitman, was also on board with the idea.

However, he sadly died last year, which ended up halting the project.

Schwarzenegger told The Hollywood Reporter that Reitman's son, Jason, blocked any progression of the sequel.

"Jason Reitman f**ked it up!" he said.

"Jason Reitman literally stopped the project when his father died."

"His father wanted to do it really badly. I wanted to do it really badly. Danny DeVito wanted to do it really badly.

"We had the financing. When his father passed away, Jason says, 'I never liked the idea' and put a hold on it."Featured Image Credit: Universal Pictures

Arnold Schwarzenegger has shared a collection of throwback pictures to celebrate 40 years of U.S. citizenship.

“On this day 40 years ago, I became an American citizen. It is one of the proudest days of my life. I owe everything to America. Born in Austria, made in America!” he wrote on Instagram.

The 76-year-old shared photos documented his life before and after he came to America, including pictures of him taking the oath of U.S. citizenship in 1983, wearing a shirt with the American flag on it and an Uncle Sam hat while holding two American flag and striking a pose in front of the Hollywood sign.

The Instagram post also has audio from the speech Schwarzenegger delivered at the Republican National Convention in New York City in 2004.

“My fellow Americans, this an amazing moment for me. To think a once-scrawny boy from Austria could grow up to become governor of the state of California, that is an immigrant’s dream,” the Terminator star can be heard saying in the clip.

He added: “In school when the teacher would talk about America, I would daydream about coming here. I would daydream about living here.”

The seven-time Mr. Olympia bodybuilding champion continued: “As long as I live, I will never forget the day when I raised my hand for the oath of citizenship. You know how proud I was? I was so proud that I walked around with the American flag wrapped around my shoulder all day long.

“I finally arrived here in 1968. What a special day it was. I remembered I arrived here with empty pockets but full of dreams, full of determination and full of desire,” the star said. “Everything about America seemed so big to me, so open, so possible.

“To my fellow immigrants listening tonight, I want you to know how welcomed you are. We encourage your dreams. We believe in your future.”

The Total Recall star was married to broadcast journalist Maria Shriver for 25 years before they divorced in 2021. Together they have four children: daughters Katherine, 33, and Christina, 31, and sons Patrick, 29, and Christopher, 25. Schwarzenegger is also father to Joseph Baena, his son with his former nanny, Mildred Patricia Baena.
