Brandon Swanson disappeared in May 2008
The final words of a 19-year-old man who was on the phone with his dad before going missing are extremely chilling.
Back in May 2008, student Brandon Swanson had been travelling home to his parents' house in Minnesota after celebrating the end of spring semester with his pals.
While he had the option to stay at a friend's house, Brandon ultimately decided to make the long drive back home to his hometown of Marshall.
But he wouldn't have been fazed by that considering he made the commute regularly for his studies, however the student would not return home on this occasion.
Around 2am on May 14, Brandon phoned his parents to inform them he had crashed his car into a ditch and could not get out.

He went on to say he was uninjured by the accident, asking his parents if they could come and pick him up.
But as Brandon was in the middle of nowhere, his mom and dad were unable to location him, so the teen walked towards some lights which he believed to be a nearby town.
The plan was that Brandon's parents would pick him up from there.
Brandon began the walk while still on the phone to his parents, but just moments later he would chillingly exclaim the words 'oh s**t' before the line went quiet.
The teen's parents immediately ran their son back, but it went straight to voicemail - that would be the story of the night.
Annette, Brandon's mother, reported him missing to police in the nearby town of Lynd at approximately 6.30am the next morning.
Authorities discovered from cell phone records that the teen wasn't in his originally assumed location of Lynd, but instead 40km away in the opposite direction.

A large search operation was launched (Marshall Independent/Public Domain)
Lyon County Sheriff Eric Wallen, as per Grand Forks Herald, said: "We were able to use the cellphone tower technology to have an idea of where his last communications or phone calls came from, so that put us on a cell tower up in that area.
"So then the search was focused there, and the car was located."
A massive search then began for Brandon, including the use of sniffer dogs along the Yellow Medicine River.
Local authorities have long theorized Brandon may have fallen into the river, though no trace of the teenager has ever been found.
In fact, police never even discovered any of his personal belongings, leaving the chilling case unsolved to this day.Featured Image Credit: NCMEC/Marshall Independent/Public Domain

The victim was identified as Jacob Cockle and he was just 28 years old when he hoped to capture a brilliant piece of footage.

Cockle had previously won awards for his impressive photography and had built up quite the reputation.
Not just for capturing images that would see him bag accolades from National Geographic and The Sunday Times but by undertaking dangerous tactics to capture the shot.
Described by those who knew him as a ‘daredevil’ who was obsessed with the ocean, Cockle found his calling in the water and taking pictures of surfers, boats and whirlpools.
"He made you believe magic existed"
Cockle had just won a £28,000 ($40,000) expedition to Antarctica, a dream for him, when tragedy would strike just weeks later.
On this fateful day, he captured a video for YouTube after seeing a whirlpool open up in the sea in Hayle harbor, Cornwall, UK.
But he wanted to reach new heights and donned a prop head, venturing out to shoot the clip again.

He loved the water. (YouTube)
Unfortunately, his curiosity of the sea would be his demise as after wanting to know what the inside of a whirlpool would look like from his GoPro camera, he decided to dive into the pool.
"There is never a day that I don't think about it"
His friend, Barnaby Courtney, told the BBC: "He had these crazy eyes that looked like the sea, his hair was always unkempt, he always looked happy.
"He made you believe magic existed."
His mother, Carolyn, chimed: "Jacob loved the water.
"Once he was in you could never get him out."
But as the vortex in Hayle harbor only appeared a few times a year, it was one of the few chances he’d ever be able to get to capturing it.

On May 28, 2013, the whirlpool returned, and Cockle enlisted the help of a friend to wade out into the water to meet it.
Artist David Raine had initially agreed to film the 28-year-old as he swam around the vortex, but by the time he had reached the harbor, the photographer was already in the water with the horse head.
At the time, Raine thought it was a bit of risky fun, like the other times his friend had filmed.
He said to him: "It looks a powerful one."
Cockle shouted back: "Ah yeah, earlier on it was really scary.
"It's fine now because it's so deep but when I first got in I was a bit scared to be honest.
"It's safe as now, though."
That’s when he asked for the GoPro camera which was attached to a pole so that he could get one last shot below the surface.
But Cockle didn’t reappear after diving down.
Running to the other end of the quay to where the whirlpool funnelled into a pool, Raine attempted to see if his friend had been caught and spat back out.
But there was no sign of him.
It was only moments later as he ran back and forth that he would spot Cockle floating in the pool facedown. It was too late.
Cockle’s mother was woken up that night and taken to Treliske Hospital in Truro to identify her son.
His love for the sea and curiosity for what lay beneath is what ended up costing him his life.

Chilling words father said to daughter after 'murdering her mother and boyfriend'

Daniel Coppola is accused of murdering his ex-wife and her boyfriend
A man who has been charged with the murder of his ex-wife and her boyfriend uttered just six words to his daughter after allegedly carrying out the act.
On Wednesday (August 28), Daniel Coppola allegedly broke into the home of Kenneth Pohlman, 53, who was dating his ex-wife, Kelly Coppola, 50, and killed the couple in cold blood.
According to reports by The New York Post, the couple were asleep when they were fatally shot, police sources claim.
At the time of the ordeal, Coppola's 15-year-old daughter, whom he shared with his ex-wife, was said to be in his car outside the property and he reportedly ordered her to stay inside the vehicle.
Pohlman's father, Kenneth Pohlman Sr, claimed to reporters that after carrying out the alleged act, Coppola reportedly returned to his car and told his daughter: "I killed your mother and Kenny."
He proceeded to flee the scene with his daughter in the car, while she frantically text her friends expressing concerns about her mother's welfare, police said.
Kevin Beyrer, commanding officer of the Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad said, as per CBS: "As he's driving her, she is communicating with friends via text saying, I don't know what my father did, I don't know how my mother is."

The teen's friends tried to get in touch with her mom and called 911 when they failed to do so.
At 11:45pm on the night in question, police officers responded to a call from a teenage girl who said that her father was threatening to kill himself with a gun, Beyrer said.
Shortly after they received another call from a different person who wanted to report that a 15-year-old girl left her mother's home with her dad without her mom's knowledge.
Officers went on to realize that the two calls were connected, ABC 7 reports, and arrived at Pohlman's home at 11:54pm to discover both him and Kelly dead.
Coppola and his ex-wife finalized what was described as a 'contentious divorce' in the last couple of years, according to police.

Pohlman's family described Coppola as a 'maniac' and Tom Pohlman, Kenneth's brother, explained that his late sister-in-law died of cancer.
He told ABC 7: "Two of his children had their mother taken from them 17 years ago from cancer."
Referring to Coppola, he added: "Today, this maniac took their father from them."
According Pohlmnan's father, he and Kelly were 'very happy' in their relationship.
"Kelly brought the best out of him and he brought the best out of her. They were very happy," he added.
It's unclear how long the pair had been together.
Following their deaths, Coppola has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder.
After being taken into custody, the 50-year-old had his mental state evaluated in light of his suicidal statements.
The 15-year-old is currently with family members, CBS reports.

Skydivers chilling final words after realizing he jumped without parachute

Ivan McGuire tragically lost his life after forgetting his parachute
There are some activities and career paths that are too dangerous for the average Joe to undertake, and even the most experienced in the field can make a tragic mistake.
Whether you like to play extreme sports or you have a hobby which other people call you crazy for, you’ll know that safety means everything.
Usually, in order to risk your life in an adrenaline-fueled activity, there is a lot of training and precautions to take.
But don’t think that awful events can only happen to the inexperienced.
For example, a highly experienced skydiver sadly lost his life after forgetting a vital piece of equipment - his parachute.
His final words were captured on a recording, after grabbing his camera to film a student and instructor in the air.
Ivan McGuire attended the Franklin County Sports Parachute Centre, US, and was on his third jump of the day in April 1988, but he wasn’t to know that this would be his last.

The 35-year-old didn’t realise that he hadn’t taken his parachute when leaping out of the plane and ended up filming his own demise as the camera continued to record as he fell back down to Earth.
McGuire was an experienced jumper before his death, completing more than 800 in his career.
In the footage recovered, McGuire can be heard shouting ‘oh my god, no’ after presumably attempting to pull on his parachute, which was missing.
The tragic incident was caught on camera, but his impact with the ground is not included in the footage. However his body was later found in the woods approximately one and a half miles from the airfield.
Captain Ralph Brown spoke to UPI after watching the tape: "It kind of appears he reached for his parachute and didn't have one.
"You could only see the instructor and the student falling on the video. But the release for his parachute is on his right hip, and when that right hand goes down, the left-hand goes forward and it comes into camera view. It's kind of boggled in there, and it sounded like he may have said, 'Oh no,' right after his left hand came into view."

At the time of the tragedy, pilot Mark Luman was investigated as it was his duty to check all on board for having parachutes.
Walter Rigsbee, FAA inspector explained: "There is a regulation, No. 105, that states that no one may jump unless the pilot checks the parachutes."
However, the wife of the parachute centre’s owner, Paul Fayard believes that nobody knew.
Nancy Fayard said at the time: "No one was aware that he got on the plane without a parachute. Of course, no one knew or they would have stopped him."
There were investigations as to whether this could have been an intentional move by McGuire, but the DailyStar reported that foul play and suicide were quickly ruled out and it was decided that the skydiver had simply forgotten his parachute which caused his death.
Some believe that McGuire even mistook his camera equipment for his parachute as the weight is around the same.
But it was one mistake which cost him his life, and his tragic death lives on as a precaution to those who board planes with the intention of skydiving today.Featured Image Credit: YouTube/ @MatthewCipolla

Chilling video of woman waving on lake is the last time she's seen alive after mysterious disappearance

A group of 12 Americans went on a yoga retreat in Guatemala in October, however, 29-year-old Nancy Ng didn't return
The last known video of Nancy Ng on a yoga retreat in Guatemala before she went missing has been released.
On October 14, 2023, the 29-year-old school assistant from Monterey Park in California went on a yoga retreat for the second year in a row in Guatemala.
However, five days later she went missing, allegedly last seen on a kayaking excursion on Lake Atitlán.
Nancy's family told ABC7 they were contacted by those who'd organized the retreat who told them Nancy hadn't been seen since the kayaking trip.
Guatemalan prosecutor's office told ABC News it was believed Nancy had 'drowned' and local fire and rescue officials reported Nancy's kayak being recovered.
Nancy's family then decided to hire a private search team.
The team was led by Black Wolf Helicopters, the company's owner Chris Sharpe saying '90-95 percent of the lake' was 'searched' using a combination of 'boat crews' alongside drones and helicopters.
However, the search resulted in no new information being discovered, with the terrain and a lack of information reported as 'complicating' the search too.

Nancy's family have now shared a video that's believed to be the last sighting of the teaching assistant before she disappeared.
The footage was taken on the day Nancy was last seen, and shows her sitting in her kayak, paddling on the lake.
One moment even sees the teaching assistant turn and wave towards the camera.
Nancy's family are urging people in the yoga group to come forward if they think they have any information which could help.
One woman on the retreat has since come forward via her attorney who said the pair 'happened upon each other on the lake'.
The attorney said the woman 'tried to tell [Nancy] not to swim because it was rough out there and there was a good current' but Nancy allegedly went out anyway.
The woman tried to get back to Nancy, but by the time she'd 'turned around to get back' she was gone

The partner of Nancy's younger sister has since set up a GoFundMe page to help fund search efforts.
It states: "[Nancy] loves yoga, traveling, hiking with her family, and cuddling with her cat. She has a kind heart, a big smile, and can talk to anyone about anything (and often, everything). She’s a caring daughter, a loving sister, and a supportive friend.
"With the help of Guatemala’s National Tourism Assistance Program and some kind locals, we have mobilized search and rescue efforts. The purpose of this fundraiser is to help support these efforts as well as the Ng Family as they navigate this unfamiliar, terrifying situation.
"It’s never easy to ask for money. It’s even harder under these circumstances. But any contribution, big or small, will go a long way in helping us do all we can to find Nancy and assure the Ng Family that they are not alone. If you can donate, please do. And if you do, please leave a note or say a prayer for Nancy and her family. It’ll mean so much to them."
The FBI is reported as offering Guatemalan authorities resources to help in the search and the state department is in touch with local officials.
