Last known words of missing millionaire suspected to have been 'eaten by cannibals' over six decades ago

Michael Rockefeller went missing in the 1960s at the age of 23

In 1961, Michael Rockefeller travelled to West Papua, Indonesia, but failed to return home.

The then 23-year-old travelled to the remote part of New Guinea to study its Asmat region and its people alongside Dutch anthropologist, René Wassing.

Rockefeller, the son of former US Vice President Nelson A. Rockefeller, is believed to have gone to the island to collect the art of the Asmat people who resided there.0 seconds of 1 minute, 59 secondsVolume 90%

Rockefeller had been to New Guinea a year prior where the team reportedly took photos of the tribe, but weren't allowed to buy any of their art work and other artefacts.

He returned a year later with Wassing in tow but while travelling to the island by sea their boat capsized.

Still 12 miles away from shore, Rockefeller said to Wassing what are believed to have been his last words.

"I think he can make it," he told her at the time, implying that he could swim all the way to shore. Sadly he was never seen again.

A huge search was then sparked in bid to find the 23-year-old, but their efforts were in vein as nine days in the Dutch interior minister stated that there 'is no longer any hope of finding Michael Rockefeller alive'.

Two weeks after he went missing and the search was called off entirely and Rockefeller was presumed dead as a result of drowning.

There have been many theories about what happened to Rockefeller over the years.

One of the final photos believed to be of the young man showed a white man with a group of Asmat people, seemingly implying that he integrated into the tribe.

But others believe he may have been eaten by the Asmat people knowing their history of cannibalism.

According to Aqua Expeditions, Asmat tribes were still practicing cannibalism as recent as the 1990s.

The website explains: "Historically, the Asmat people were documented headhunters and cannibals, believing they could absorb the spiritual power of their enemies through their skull. An intricate initiation ceremony involving captured heads invited young Asmat boys into manhood."

It's also been suggested that the Dutch government purposely swept Rockefeller's death under the rug.

In a 2014 book, author Carl Hoffman agreed that Rockefeller may have been eaten by the tribe, but the country was more interested in maintaining it's relationship with the remote tribe than finding answers about Rockefeller's death.

Mystery of missing millionaire suspected to have been 'eaten by cannibals' over six decades ago 'solved' by man

Michael Rockefeller was researching the Asmat tribe in present day Papua

Research into the disappearance of Michael Rockefeller might prove he met a horrific fate during his time in the Asmat region of southwestern New Guinea.

Born in 1938, he was the son of Nelson A. Rockefeller, an American businessman known for being the former Vice President. Michael's great-grandfather was Standard Oil co-founder John D. Rockefeller.

After graduating from Harvard, Michael headed to the Asmat region, now part of the Indonesian province of Papua to work on a documentary.

In 1961 — seven months into his research — a canoe in which the 23-year-old was travelling with anthropologist René Wassing capsized.

Michael decided to brave the river and swim to shore - a journey he estimated would be between three and ten miles - but was never seen again.

Rockefeller was officially declared dead by drowning, though it seems that author Carl Hoffman has a different, much grimmer explanation as to what truly happened to the budding ethnographer.

In his 2014 book Savage Harvest, Hoffman details his theory according to which Rockefeller was killed and eaten by the cannibalistic Asmat tribe.

Hoffman believes that the investigation into Rockefeller's death was swept under the rug by the Dutch, who were focused on keeping their colony and showing our efficient their government had been.

In an interview with the NPR, Hoffman claims to have seen 'hundreds and hundreds of pages of original memos and cables and letters' between the Dutch and the Catholic Church.

"It was this huge paper trail that showed that within, really, two weeks almost of Michael's disappearance, two priests on the ground and Asmat-speaking people — men who had been in the area for years and knew the villages and the men who lived in them well — heard rumors that Michael had swum ashore, encountered men from [the village of] Otsjanep and he had been killed by them," Hoffman said.

"And those priests looked into it further and wrote, actually, fairly long, detailed reports in which they named names — who had Michael's head, who had ... other parts of his skeleton.

"They filed those reports both to their superiors in the church and to the Dutch government. And they're all sort of saying: What are we going to do? Let's not tell the Rockefellers."

He then said: "The Dutch did a full investigation and sent a police officer to the village of Otsjanep to live and find out and that was all kept secret."

In an AMA session on Reddit, Hoffman recalled the time he spent with the Asmat tribe, explaining cannibalism used to be practiced as headhunting and for ritualistic purposes, though it began to disappear during the 1960s.

As to why the locals could've consumed Rockefeller's body, Hoffman hypothesised it could have been in retaliation after a 'Dutch government raid' on the village of Otsjanep in 1958.

"[The raid] killed five people, four of them the most important men in the village," Hoffman wrote.

"That made the world unbalanced, in the Asmat cosmos, and ultimately the men who took their places as the heads of the jeu, or longhouses — think of them as clans — were there when Michael swam up exhausted and vulnerable and alone. They killed him."Featured Image Credit: Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology/Alamy

Death of missing millionaire remains a mystery amid suspicion 'cannibals ate his brains and danced in his blood'

Michael Rockefeller wanted to further his research into the mysterious Asmat tribe

Mystery has shrouded the disappearance of a wealthy American man for decades - with many believing he could’ve had his ‘brain eaten’ by a cannibalistic tribe.

Michael Clark Rockefeller, 23, was the son of Nelson A. Rockefeller - an American businessman and former Vice President of the United States.

Born on May 18, 1938, he was one of seven children who shared a great-grandfather in Standard Oil co-founder John D. Rockefeller.0 seconds of 1 minute, 59 secondsVolume 90%

Following his graduation from Harvard University after studying history and economics, the 23-year-old completed a six-month stint in the United States Army before travelled to the Asmat region of southwestern New Guinea.

Whilst in the country - now a part of the Indonesian province of Papua - the budding ethnographer worked on a documentary called Dead Birds and later decided he wanted to further his research into the mysterious Asmat tribe.

However, just seven months into his expedition, disaster struck when he and Dutch anthropologist René Wassing were travelling to shore in a 40-foot canoe.

Reports claim the explorers were around three nautical miles out from the island on November 17, 1961, when fierce waters swamped their vessel.

Eventually, their canoe capsized and the pair were tossed into the unforgiving waters.

Despite Wassing being willing to wait for help, Rockefeller was allegedly determined to reach the shore and decided to swim.

Wassing was later spotted in the Arafura Sea by a search party but unbelievably, Rockefeller was never seen again.

60 years after the wealthy man disappeared - with him later being declared dead by drowning - a multitude of outlandish theories have developed.

One rumor claims that Rockefeller was successful in his swim mission - but ended up being killed and consumed by the cannibalistic Asmat tribe who ‘danced in his blood’.

Another alleged he had been eaten by sharks on his way to the island, while a third theory is that he’d turned his back on the West and decided to make a life for himself in the jungle.

Another theory is that Rockefeller lives amongst the tribe. (Malcolm Kirk/National Geographic)

This latter claim was backed up when a National Geographic project was dropped on the clan ten years later.

It’s alleged that Malcolm Kirk, the man who snapped the documentary footage, caught a single white man rowing with the tribe on camera.

However, he said he was sceptical of whether the missing man ever really featured.

He said: "I can’t say I was particularly aware of a light-skinned figure in one of the canoes, but I do recall coming across a reference to an albino male when I glanced through my journal a few weeks ago."

Documentary maker Fraser Heston, whose 2011 film The Search for Michael Rockefeller investigated the disappearance, remains more open-minded.

In his doc, he said: "This shot of a bearded, light-skinned Caucasian paddling in a canoe full of naked Asmat warriors begs more questions than it answers.

“The resemblance to Michael Rockefeller, an accomplished canoeist who wore a beard, is obvious.”

Major discovery as six-second signal could solve mystery of missing MH370 plane

Scientists think they've cracked the code using sound

The mystery of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 could be solved after researchers discovered key evidence of its crash.

On 8 March, 2014, 239 passengers and crew boarded a Boeing 777 flight and took off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

But the Malaysia Airlines plane was suddenly lost from air traffic control’s secondary surveillance radar mid-flight and never heard from again.

It was due to reach its planned destination, Beijing Capital International Airport in China and over a decade later, officials are still unsure what happened to flight MH370.0 seconds of 1 minute, 51 secondsVolume 90%

Despite extensive search efforts, only small parts of the aeroplane have been discovered, and they didn’t explain how or why it went missing.

Now, a six-second sound clip could hold the answers to where it is and when it crashed.

Researchers from Cardiff University believe that hydrophone recordings could be the final piece of the puzzle and finally locate the flight.

The NOAA National Ocean Service explained that a hydrophone is an underwater device that detects, and records ocean sounds from all directions.

This could surely detect something as big as an aircraft crashing into the ocean.

Mathematician and engineer Dr Usama Kadri, who was part of the research team, claimed hydrophones were in operation at Western Australia’s Cape Leeuwin and Diego Garcia, an island in the Indian Ocean at the time of the flight’s disappearance.

He wrote in The Conversation: “A 200-tonne aircraft crashing at a speed of 200 metres per second would release the kinetic energy equivalent to a small earthquake

“It would be large enough to be recorded by hydrophones thousands of kilometres away.”

Dr Kadri and his team analyzed Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization’s (CTBTO) hydroacoustic stations and checked signals along MH370’s initial flight path but no corresponding acoustic signatures were initially detected.

The researchers claim the findings aren’t conclusive: “Given the sensitivity of the hydrophones, it’s highly unlikely that a large aircraft impacting the ocean surface wouldn’t leave a detectable pressure signature, particularly on nearby hydrophones. But unfavourable ocean conditions could potentially dampen or obscure such a signal.”

Dr Kadri said it has highlighted ‘the potential of hydroacoustic technology in solving this aviation mystery’.

He explained: “By refining our methods and conducting further experiments, we could provide new insights into MH370’s fate and improve our response to future maritime incidents.”

Dr Usama Kadri says ongoing efforts can bring closure to the victim's families. Cardiff University

He also trying to seek closure for the families of those on board, which helps the team boost their efforts to ‘track and understand aviation accidents over vast oceanic expanses.’

Dr. Kadri said: “If the recommendations are followed by the appropriate authorities, we can assess the relevance of the observed signals, potentially shedding light on the location of MH370.”

As the search efforts to find MH370 have been exhaustive for Malaysia and surrounding countries that attempted to help scour the sea in search of it, this data- if correct - could potentially solve the decade-long mystery once and for all.

After debris washed ashore in the Indian Ocean, many believed that this could be the evidence to lead searchers to the craft, without avail.Featured Image Credit: https://www.unilad.com/news/crime/steven-powell-sy

Last known photo of inventor who inspired Tesla was taken just before he died alone and penniless

Nikola Tesla died in 1943 - 60 years before the car company was founded in his name

Reddit users have recently discovered the fate of inventor Nikola Tesla - the little-known namesake of Elon Musk’s automative company.

Born in 1856, Nikola lived until he was 86 and is best known for inventing the first alternating current (AC) motor.

During his career, the electrical engineer also created the Tesla coil, the neon lamp and the first wireless remote-control boat.

However, despite early gaining fame and fortune for his work, Nikola later fell into relative obscurity.

Due to his inventions falling out of favor with the world, the futurist ended up spending all of his money and was forced to live in a series of New York hotels.

Due to not being able to afford the rooms, he often left bills unpaid and his work fell into relative obscurity.

In January 1943, Nikola died on the 33rd floor of the Hotel New Yorker in Manhattan.

His cause of death was later declared coronary thrombosis.

Following his lonely death, US government agents were said to have swept into Nikola’s digs to gather up his notes and files, which still remain a mystery.

60 years after his death, Tesla Motors, incorporated in July 2003, was named after the electrical engineer in tribute.

Taking to the popular Reddit thread r/interestingasf**k, one user posted a photograph of what is believed to be the last taken of Nikola.

Underneath the heartbreaking post, one social media user wrote: “Some of the most creative geniuses have spent their entire lives being underappreciated, only to become influential after their death.

“Nicola Tesla, Leonardo Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Ludwig Boltzmann etc.”

A second said: “The car company was named after him and their logo modeled after his face. How kind!”

Unfortunately, this user’s comment is up for debate as Tesla has never actually confirmed the inspiration behind its logo design.

In 2017, Musk claimed it was supposed to symbolize a ‘cross-section of an electric motor’.

However, others have speculated if it is simply an elegant representation of the letter ‘T’.

Speaking about Nikola, a third Reddit user typed: “Tesla was one those people that have great ideas but awful communication.

“He pretty much was too smart for his time and couldn't teach people or get them to listen to him. Poor man must have felt so alone.”

Another said: “It's a shame and a black eye on our culture that such a brilliant man whose impact on modern society is immeasurable, died in such unfortunate circumstances.”Featured Image Credit: Herbert Barraud/Hulton Archive/Getty Images/ History via YouTube
